HEALTHSOUTH Launches Scientifically Based Weight Management Programs With INTERVENT USA in Time for New Year's Resolutions

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.

HEALTHSOUTH Corporation today announced a strategic relationship with INTERVENT USA, Inc., a weight-loss and weight management company, to provide scientifically based weight management programs for individuals who have undergone resting metabolic rate, or "RMR", testing at a HEALTHSOUTH facility. RMR represents the speed at which the body burns calories while at rest. This important information is used as part of the INTERVENT programs to help formulate individualized nutrition plans.

Individuals can participate in a 12-week, self-help version of INTERVENT via the Internet from the convenience and privacy of their homes or offices. Participants receive an individualized report outlining realistic goals and a personal action plan for achieving their goals. They progress at their own pace through a series of written and audio behavior change modules and, after 12 weeks, receive a personal progress report. HEALTHSOUTH patients will also have an opportunity to participate in programs of a longer duration and to receive one-on-one guidance from INTERVENT's health professionals, called "mentors," via the telephone and Internet.

"According to two recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention studies, Americans are heavier than ever, with nearly two-thirds of us being classified as overweight. This is troubling because being overweight significantly raises the risk for heart disease, diabetes, some forms of cancer, and other chronic health problems," says HEALTHSOUTH's Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, Richard M. Scrushy. "We want to provide an effective intervention for our patients who are trying to manage their weight, and we selected INTERVENT because it is scientifically proven to be both safe and effective."

"Losing weight and keeping it off for good is one of the most difficult lifestyle challenges an individual can face," says Neil Gordon, MD, PhD, president and founder of INTERVENT USA. "INTERVENT is a lifelong solution to losing weight and avoiding weight gain. Our overweight participants are able to manage their weight by learning to practice new eating, exercise, and stress management habits. And our studies, published in leading medical journals, show that participants also reduce their risk for heart disease and improve their overall health."

In describing the benefits of web-based lifestyle management programs, Dr. Richard Salmon, executive vice-president for information technology at INTERVENT USA says, "We have used 'high tech' to make our programs easily accessible on a global basis. Technology also reduces the cost of the program significantly. Almost anyone can afford our programs. The one-on-one guidance participants receive from our mentors provides the opportunity for the 'high touch' features that are critical for many people. In fact, our research shows that our participants who receive guidance from our mentors via the telephone and Internet are as successful as those who interact with the health professional in a face-to-face visit."
